Lisbon coast in the guides
Surfing in January Ericeira's reefs, inside Europe's first World Surfing Reserve, need exactly these north-west swells. Coxos is the famous one; Ribeira d'Ilhas is the forgiving point that almost always has something to ride.
Surfing in February Ericeira's reefs and points, from Coxos to Ribeira d'Ilhas, are in season, and the beaches of Sintra and Cascais give easier options within an hour of Lisbon.
Surfing in March Spring swells keep Ericeira's reefs busy, and the long beaches of Sintra and Guincho take the full north-west swell. Water around 15 °C makes it the mild option on the mainland.
Surfing in April Ericeira's reefs and the beaches between Sintra and Caparica give waves for every level, with the water at about 16 °C.
Surfing in May Ericeira's Foz do Lizandro and the town beaches of Costa da Caparica are busy with schools, and the water reaches about 17 °C.
Surfing in June June gives you summer weather and the longest days of the year before the school holidays begin. Swells are usually small, so think longboards, lessons and dawn patrols, or the exposed corners of Portugal, Cornwall and Ireland that catch what there is.
Surfing in September Ericeira's reefs come back to life with the first autumn swells. Ribeira d'Ilhas, the most forgiving of them, almost always has something to ride.
Surfing in October Coxos, Ericeira's most famous reef, wakes up on long-period north-west swells. The water is still about 19.5 °C.
Surfing in November Coxos and the other Ericeira reefs are in season, with long-period north-west swells and the water still about 18.5 °C.
